SERIAL PRAXIS

Curated by Stephanie Fielding

Reception: Friday March 18th 7-11pm

March 14 – 20, 11-4pm

An exhibition of five artists exploring contemporary iterations of the readymade through process and repetition.  Each artist approaches the mass-produced object as something to be deconstructed through the production and alteration of multiples.  Appropriation moves beyond simple reiteration as each representation embodies a personal reclamation made by the artist. The works themselves are not intended to critique the institution of art, but rather the manufacturing and iteration of objects themselves; they not only manipulate forms but become permutations of the forms themselves.

AS IF YOU STILL SEE IT IN FRONT OF YOU

Curated by Lisa Visser

Showing in conjunction with the Image Festival, As If You See It In Front Of You, is an exhibition of seven media art students, curated by Lisa Visser. In this exhibition are: Andrew McGill, Logan MacDonald, Carolyn Armstrong, Faye Mullen, Rita Camacho Lomeli, Francisco-Fernando Granados, and Takin Aghdashloo. Alongside the writings of Jean-Luc Nancy in Being Singular Plural , Visser—curator, is probing the idea of presence and what it means to be connected.

“…meaning is itself the sharing of being. Every connection we have creates meaning: every singular person is plural. Exploring connections includes considering how connections can be missed or can fail, become aggravated, or emphasized. This is the suggestion of community, built around the very act of being - and being-with - one another.”
Below is an excerpt from Visser’s exhibition essay As If You See It In Front Of You:

Looking through the shield of a screen by the very nature of its ambiguity, media art is lodged in the spaces between video and installation, between the abstract and the real, between speculative absence and digital presence, between effort and failure. Within this framework of uncertainty, what results is an exhibition that explores performance, presence and a sense of being-with. This exploration constructs a possible awareness of ones connectivity, exceeding the limitations of wires and signals, bringing the audience towards a sensorial, emotional, and psychological relation. What remains are subtle emotions: a sense of worth and contribution, a sense of self-doubt.
Each of these artists presents a certain yet ambiguous investigation of media and the medium. as if you still see it in front of you is an exhibition of connection (through literal technology and across invisible hubs of social activity), challenging conventions of media art. The result is an amplification of the “we” and the medium.

As an admirer of Lisa’s work, both as a curator and art practitioner, it’s especially interesting to see the ways in which her narratives take form.

As If You Still See It In Front Of You, challenges the notions of independence with interdependence, for the sake of connection, in place of coexistence.

This exhibition is running from March 18th to April 9th.

The Closing Reception is April 2nd 2pm-5pm

You don't want to miss it!

ABSTRACT IMPLICATIONS

ABSTRACT IMPLICATIONS

WHERE:    Steam Whistle Brewing

The Roundhouse, 255 Bremner Blvd., Toronto M5V 3M9,

WHEN:      This exhibition is running until Thursday March 31.

Free to the public

Abstraction has been the topic of heated debate since the early 1900s. As a means of representation, abstraction has been rigorously discussed and dissected by both the general public and the art community. I once heard a Professor at OCAD University says that “artists are like beacons of light—drawing light to issues that would otherwise be unseen and unheard if they weren’t there". Considering this truth, I was reminded of  the words of  Soëtsu Anagi in The Unknown Cratfsman, where he tells us that “to see is to go directly to the core”. The aims of abstraction in part are to depict ‘that core’ in driving us the viewer past the things that would keep us from seeing it otherwise. As conveyed in Art in Theory: An Anthology of Changing Ideas, ‘The history of painting  is a history of seeing’. Here, current students and graduates of OCAD University are exploring the essentials of abstraction in Abstract Implications .

A featured artist in the group exhibition, Erin Loree has been known for taking an uncanny route in representing  the essentials in abstraction. Much like a well-written poem where the author’s linguistic are beautifully synthesized together, forming a timeless poem, I’ve often if not always found Erin Loree’s works a beautiful fusing of both the uncanny and mundane. Her work in Abstract Implications again does not fall short of her reputation as a daring artist.

Pictures At An Exhibition

On view at The Museum Of Contemporary Canadian Art
is LUIS JACOB’S PICTURES AT AN EXHIBITION [Feb 04, 2011 - Mar 27, 2011]

Showing in three locations over 2010 through 2011, Luis Jacobs Pictures At An Exhibition features  early and recent work from Jacob.

The MOCCA purposes this exhibition to be a vision about vision. Upon visiting the exhibition I found that Jacob, much to the liking of Leo Tolstoy’s theory on the representation and responses to an emotion, places  Pictures At An Exhibition within the same school of thought. The smaller scaled pieces allow for examination of relation between the viewer and the work to take place.  I was reminded of the scene from The Matrix Revolutions, when Neo removes the bandages from his covered eyes, as Pictures At An Exhibition speaks to vision.

Luis Jacob has achieved an international reputation, particularly since his participation in Documenta 12 in 2007, with solo exhibitions at the Städtisches Museum Abteiberg and the Hamburger Kunstverein, and in Canada at the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery, the Darling Foundry and Musée d’art de Joliette. In 2010 his work was featured at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and at the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, in the exhibition Haunted: Contemporary Photography/Video/Performance, and in the Kunsthalle Bern in the exhibition Animism. Luis Jacob is represented by Birch Libralato, Toronto.

Up until March 27th and definitely worth checking out..
